The VFW TAPS Program ensures that every eligible veteran receives the military funeral honors they have earned through honorable service to our nation. Through dedicated volunteer honor guards and ceremonial buglers, local VFW Posts work with families and funeral directors to provide a meaningful final tribute to departed veterans.
The program coordinates military funeral honors that include the traditional sounding of Taps, the solemn 24-note bugle call that symbolizes a nation's gratitude and farewell. Honor Guard teams may also conduct flag-folding ceremonies, present the American flag to the veteran's family, and render military honors that reflect the dignity of their service.
Funeral Honor Guards
VFW volunteers provide ceremonial support that may include rifle volleys, folding of the United States flag, and presentation of the flag to the veteran's next of kin.
Sounding of Taps
The program arranges for a live bugler or ceremonial sounding of Taps, ensuring this revered military tradition is included in the veteran's final honors.
Funeral Coordination Support
Local Posts assist families and funeral directors in coordinating military honors and may provide guidance regarding service records and required documentation to help ensure a smooth and respectful ceremony.
